First Day with Jonatan

The day went better than expected.

When bringing home a kitten or puppy, it is a big advantage to get them early in the day. This way, both you and the new arrival have the whole day to get acquainted and comfortable in the new environment before night falls and the home suddenly becomes quiet and dark.

Throughout the day, we had time for play, exploring the surroundings, some relaxation, food and water – and, of course, a bathroom break. It is important to get all of this done while there is still daylight.

Moving to a new home is a big transition for a small kitten. It can be both challenging and exhausting. That’s why it’s essential to ensure that they have peace and quiet to eat and drink. Without nourishment, no hero can function!
If the kitten is feeling insecure, it may need time and space to feel safe enough to eat. If the appetite is poor, a small taste enhancement can help to get them started.

In the bathroom, which serves as Jonatan’s base, we have placed three essential resources close together, making them easy to find during his explorations: a small scratching post, an open litter box, and food.

Easy access to food helps encourage eating. The first week is quite overwhelming for a small kitten, so it’s crucial that he gets enough energy to feel secure and settle into his new home.

The same goes for the litter box. Good bathroom habits should be established from the start. If the kitten has access to too large an area, it might lose track of where the litter box is and be forced to find an alternative spot – which could end up being a hidden corner behind the sofa. Additionally, the kitten should be left undisturbed when using the litter box to ensure it feels safe enough to do its business. Be mindful that bathroom breaks are often needed after playtime, meals, and sleep.

After a good rest on the sofa, Jonatan confidently trotted back to the bathroom and his base. We had already shown him the litter box earlier in the day, and he had explored it on his own. So he remembered where it was.

With that, we could end the day with peace of mind – just a small night light on, so he can easily find his way if he needs to go during the night.

First we need food
... then we need to visit litterbox
