Visiting the Kitten
Just like when bringing a puppy into your home, it’s a great advantage to have the opportunity to meet your kitten before bringing them home. This allows both you and the breeder to get to know each other. The breeder can gain an impression of who you are and better assess which kitten will be the best match for your home.
In some cases, you don’t get to choose the kitten yourself – the breeder selects one based on the kitten’s personality and your needs. Some kittens are shy and do best in calm environments, while others are more active and curious. A very playful and energetic kitten may not be the best fit for a small apartment or for someone who is away from home often.
Visiting the kitten also gives you the chance to meet the mother cat and observe her temperament. Is she friendly and confident? Are the kittens curious and playful, as they should be for their age? Do they look healthy, of similar size, and show normal playfulness?
We have been lucky to visit Jonatan several times. We even got to be there for his health check, vaccinations, and microchipping – something we really appreciate. The breeder has been very accommodating, and even Jesper has had the chance to see and sniff Jonatan.
If you already have a cat that is very territorial, it can be a good idea to introduce them in a neutral place where neither cat has an established territory. This is especially important if you have adult cats. A cat hotel with experienced staff or a knowledgeable friend who understands the process of introducing cats can be great options.
Keep in mind that a kitten has only ever been around its mother and siblings. It doesn’t understand that other cats may not like them or even be interested in them. Without a safe and controlled introduction, an adult cat could harm the kitten. That’s why it’s so important to facilitate a gradual and positive introduction.
Be careful when choosing a breeder, whether you are getting a domestic or a purebred cat. As long as people buy kittens indiscriminately, there will be breeders who prioritize profit over animal welfare. Many kittens are sold without vaccinations or microchipping, yet people are still willing to pay high prices for a specific look or color.
Choose a breeder who truly cares and puts effort into raising the kittens. The start of a kitten’s life is crucial for its future health and personality, and a responsible breeder ensures a safe and stable upbringing.
We are lucky to be part of Jonatan’s early life and to have a breeder who is doing everything possible to make the transition to his new home as smooth and safe as possible.
