Some cats are very sensitive to changes in their home—a new sofa, a rug, or a wardrobe can make everything smell different, often with strong factory or store scents. Such changes can be stressful for a cat, as they see their home as their core territory.
Even though we think of it as our living room, to the cat, it is their most important zone. That’s why it can be a good idea to introduce new things gradually, especially if the cat is anxious or sensitive to change. For example, you can bring in a new litter box one week, new food bowls the next, and so on.
Luckily, Jesper and Kasper are not particularly sensitive to changes in the house, so this isn’t something we have to worry too much about. However, we have a new litter box, which is currently placed in the bathroom without sand. Jonatan will have his own base in the bathroom until he has been properly introduced and feels at home.
Always remember the rule: have one more litter box than the number of cats. If you have three cats, you should have four litter boxes.
Another thing we need is a larger water fountain. The one we have now holds almost three liters, but with four cats in the house, it's time to invest in a bigger one.
We’ll also get some wand toys so Jonatan doesn’t learn to play with our hands. Additionally, we’ll buy some toy mice and balls—and of course, treats for rewards!
We already have cat tree, beds, food bowls, and all the essentials, which tend to accumulate when you've had pets for decades. But no matter how much equipment you have, a sturdy scratching post is essential. It should be tall enough for the cat to climb, lie high up, and have a good view of the room. A minimum height is one meter, and it should stand firmly when the cat stretches or sharpens its claws.
Please, do not buy 40–50 cm tall scratching posts just because they are the cheapest option. They are completely useless for cats—but probably perfect as perches for chickens!
Either way, a new and larger water fountain is on its way. The old one, which has lasted 7–8 years, is being replaced with a clear conscience.
