Jesper Meets Jonatan

Jesper was the first to go. It’s not very common to let a cat meet or see a new feline before it moves in, but the circumstances made it possible—so why not?

This would give me a small hint about how "cat-hater" Jesper might react when Jonatan eventually moves in. At the same time, I could bring home the first scent blanket for the territory ruler, Kasper.

Jesper observed Jonatan and his siblings from a distance, but he didn’t seem particularly impressed—neither by the fact that they were cats, nor by the fact that there were several of them. The little kittens, on the other hand, were completely unfazed by the red cat with large black eyes and ears sticking straight out. They were far too busy exploring all the exciting things outside their crate.

Jesper would have happily snuck into the break room for a nap, but I kindly asked him to stay put and enjoy the view a little longer. I imagine he was in shock, realizing that not just one, but several kittens were present, probably wondering how all of them would end up taking over his beloved spots on the cat tree.

Maybe he’ll be extra relieved when he one day discovers that only one little kitten is actually coming home.

Little brother is still completely thrilled about a kitten and has only caught a brief glimpse of him from a distance.

We took the blanket home.

There, we were met by Kasper, who immediately picked up an intriguing scent. If only he knew! We spread out the blanket and let him sniff away. With his nose pressed deep into the fleece fabric, he absorbed every single cell and molecule of unfamiliar cat scent. Back and forth across the blanket, like a vacuum cleaner.

To make the experience a bit more positive, I placed some treats on the blanket. Maybe in a few weeks, he’ll associate this smell with something exciting—and a hint of tasty treats on top.

After all, little brother Jonatan is a treat himself—a sweet little sibling.

The scents were at least interesting. After a few deep sniffs, Kasper lifted his head and looked around, as if checking whether this unknown intruder had already sneaked into the house. No kitten in sight. So, he continued vacuuming the blanket for more scent trails, going back and forth a few more times.

A Little More About Our Choice, Part 2

Over the years, we’ve provided a home for many animals in need—not just cats, but also birds, horses, cattle, and more.

“ I think it's sad that it didn't end up being a domestic cat. ”

When we were choosing a new cat, we knew it would spark reactions—some hoped we would adopt a homeless cat.
